Red Sox show interest in Werth

The free agency period has just gotten underway but the Boston Red Sox are already showing interest in outfielder Jayson Werth.

Werth is looking for a big contract, but his age, 32, could hurt his chances of landing the deal he seeks.

The Philadelphia Phillies initially seemed resigned to the fact that they would re-sign Werth, but they suddenly believe he might return.

The Red Sox were looking for an outfielder to replace the hole left when the team traded away Manny Ramirez and let Jason Bay leave via free agency. (Read More…)

Red Sox pick up Ortiz option

The Boston Red Sox have elected to pick up the $12 million option on designated hitter David Ortiz for the 2011 season.

There had been a lot of debate over the past several months about what the Red Sox would do with Ortiz.

That’s a hefty option for 2011, but at the same time, Ortiz has been pleading for a contract extension.

The DH said that he is not unhappy that his option was picked up and won’t complain about his contract situation. (Read More…)

Beltre declines option

Boston Red Sox third baseman Adrian Beltre declined his $10 million option for 2011, opting to become a free agent.

After a very strong season, Beltre believes he is set to earn a much bigger, long-term contract on the open market.

There are several teams with a need a third base and there it isn’t a very strong free agent class, making Beltre very desireable.

Teams may shy away a bit from Beltre simply because his play fell so far after he was rewarded a big contract with the Seattle Mariners several years ago. (Read More…)
