Boston Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett has signed a four-year extension with the club worth $68 million.
The Red Sox and Beckett have been trying to come to an agreement on an extension for several months now but never seemed all that close to a deal.
Beckett made it clear that he wanted to be paid as baseball’s top pitcher, but the Red Sox weren’t willing to go there after two straight seasons of disappointment.
The team also feels like Jon Lester could be ready to become the staff ace and did not want to pay Beckett big bucks just before making him their No. 1 starter.
All things considered, Beckett has to be thrilled to get a contract that will pay him $17 million per season over the next four years.

The Boston Red Sox have placed starting pitcher Dice-K on the 15-day disabled list with back and neck pain.
It’s just the latest disappointment for the Red Sox and Dice-K, which is a relationship on the rocks at the moment.
The team has not been happy with Dice-K’s work ethic at times, and he made just 12 starts last year.
Dice-K is expected to make three rehab starts at Triple-A Pawtucket before the Red Sox decide what to do with him.
Manager Terry Francona said the team isn’t just looking at the radar gun, but to see if he has command of his fastball and offspeed pitches.

The Boston Red Sox have a four-year contract extension offer on the table for pitcher Josh Beckett.
Beckett has previously made it known that he wants to become baseball’s highest-paid pitcher.
A couple of years ago, a huge contract might have been likely. Now, it seems shaky at best.
Beckett has significantly slowed in recent seasons, possibly due to the wear and tear on his arm because of so many postseason outings.
In fact, many in the Boston organization believe this will be the year that Jon Lester surpasses Beckett and becomes the team’s new ace.
